ARTIST'S STATEMENT

The amazing variety of stones and rocky outcroppings all along the Maine coast provide a steady source of inspiration for my most recent work. I am fascinated by the patterns, movement and structure created by the various forces of nature that have shaped this coastline.

As a young child my family would spend many a summer weekend exploring Cape Cod. We camped at the Shawme-Crowell State Forest in Sandwich and delighted in exploring our many favorite haunts; Sandy Neck Beach, the penny candy store in Centerville and Christie’s Gem and Mineral Shop. If he wasn’t too busy Mr. Christie would polish up one side of some promising beach stone we had brought along and it always seemed something magical was revealed. Sometimes we would also go hunt around the ruins of the old Sandwich Glass factory, searching for little bits and pieces of the glass that had been left behind.

Fast forward to Maine and the countless hours I have spent with my own children exploring tide pools and collecting all manner of sea glass and pottery shards along the beaches.

These monotypes remember all of those times and many of them fulfill the fantasy of finding that special treasure hidden amongst the rocks.
