ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Printmaking, painting, drawing and collage are mediums I use to explore both the world of nature and the world of who and what we are as human beings. I see the outer world as a mirror, reflecting in visual symbol and metaphor all that makes up our existence. Abstracting and simplifying images and forms allows me to focus on the feelings and qualities of the subject.
For the past fifteen years I've drawn inspiration from some of my favorite themes in nature; islands, water and sea life, for example. I use the elements of line, color, form and light to go beyond imitation or manipulation and try to bring out something of the spirit of the subject. Because the press and my studio are in the same building, I can easily work back and forth between printmaking and painting mediums, so there is a great climate for experimentation. I have worked in lithography, etching and other printing forms, and am currently exploring the vast possibilities of photoetching and monotype. Printmaking forces me to think upside down and backwards. It brings surprises, and new perceptions.
